One HRV number cannot tell everyone the same story. A personal baseline shows where your body usually sits, then helps you notice when today is meaningfully different. This guide explains how long a baseline takes to mature, why daytime and nighttime need separate reference points, and why it is supposed to move.

Why population averages fail you personally

Search for normal HRV and you will find charts of average values by age. They are not wrong, but they are close to useless as a daily guide. Two healthy people of the same age, sex, and fitness level routinely differ by 20 to 30 ms or more, which is wider than most of the changes you would ever try to interpret.

The practical consequence is simple: a reading of 40 ms might be completely ordinary for you and a significant drop for someone else. Without your own reference point, the number is unreadable — which is precisely the problem a personal baseline exists to solve.

What a baseline actually is

A baseline is a rolling picture of where your body usually sits, built from your own recent history rather than a fixed threshold. Instead of asking whether your HRV is above or below a number that applies to everyone, it asks whether today is meaningfully different from your own normal.

Daytime and nighttime are different baselines

HRV follows a daily rhythm. It is generally higher during sleep and lower during waking hours, and the difference is large enough that comparing a 3pm reading against a 3am one tells you nothing useful.

Your baseline is supposed to move

A baseline is a moving reference, not a permanent target. Sleep quality, training load, alcohol, illness, travel, shift work, and changes in routine all shift it, and that is the system working correctly rather than failing.

Some shifts are longer-term and entirely healthy. Improving aerobic fitness tends to raise HRV over months. Age gradually lowers it. Starting or stopping certain medications — beta-blockers in particular — can move it substantially. In each case the old baseline simply stops applying, and the right response is to let the new one establish rather than to treat the change as a problem.

Consistency beats extra measurements

More readings per day do not produce a better baseline; regular wear does. A single clean measurement taken at roughly the same time each morning contributes more than scattered readings taken at random moments under different conditions.

Gaps matter more than frequency in the short term. Several days without wearing the watch will weaken the baseline more than taking fewer readings on the days you do wear it. If you want a dependable reference, prioritise wearing it daily over measuring obsessively.

Assuming a shift is always bad: baselines move for good reasons too — improved fitness, better sleep, a new routine. Direction over several weeks is what carries meaning, not any single move.

What breaks an established baseline

A baseline is a description of a period, not a permanent property of your body. When your routine, your health, or your hardware changes materially, the old baseline stops being a fair comparison — and continuing to use it produces misleading alerts.

The mistake is not having a broken baseline. The mistake is treating the resulting readings as a change in your physiology when the change actually happened in your circumstances or your measurement setup.

Rebuilding a baseline after a gap

If you stop measuring for a while, the honest answer is that you start again. A baseline built from sparse, irregular readings is worse than no baseline, because it looks authoritative while describing very little.

The recovery path is the same as the original one: measure at a consistent time, under consistent conditions, and wait. During the first week treat everything as indicative only; by the fourth week the comparison becomes dependable again.

One shortcut is legitimate — if your circumstances and your hardware have not changed, historical data still tells you roughly where you sit. You can use it as context while the new baseline matures, as long as you do not treat small differences against it as meaningful.
